As you can see by the beatific expression on this policeman’s face, one of the tougher assignments in Cartagena, Colombia is crowd control in the barrio of the winner of the annual Miss Popular beauty pageant. Pictured is Geraldine Alvarez Martin, giving a hug to one of the barrio children. The event celebrates the beauty of the nation’s Afro-Colombian women, and runs parallel to the Miss Colombia pageant, which is open only to those of wealth, or those with rich backers.
