Voodoo Magic

Jour des Morts in Haiti is the annual celebration of voodoo when Ghede, the family of spirits that rule over death and fertility, make a pilgrimage to the corporeal world, lured by voodoo priests and priestesses, music and fetishes. This man is dressed in ritual purple, his face covered in chalk to represent the pallor of the dead. He carries a bottle of rum filled with chili peppers, which is used in voodoo ceremonies. Tallulah photographed him in the Grand Cemetery of Port-au-Prince, or Grand Cimetiere De Port-au-Prince, a necropolis that has been used as housing since the 2010 earthquake. A large, beautifully framed reprint of this photo is one of the silent auction items at the July 4th event at Hycroft Manor.
